Be Where Your Feet Are

by Tyler Patfield
Mar 30, 2025

Welcome to this week's edition of *Notes from the Coach.  Today, we’re diving into a topic that many of us struggle with at different times: feeling bad about ourselves. We call this experience "going into the gap" the emotional space where we feel disconnected from the parts of ourselves we love. It can be a challenging place to be, and unfortunately, it’s something we all experience from time to time.

### What is the Gap?

The gap refers to the negative space within ourselves, where self-doubt and discomfort linger. It can feel overwhelming and leave us stuck for days, weeks, months, or even years. But why do we go into the gap in the first place?

The answer is simple: a part of our light resides there. The goal during these times is to reclaim that light and restore our sense of self.

### Recognizing When You're in the Gap

Sometimes, when we’re in the gap, we’re so absorbed by the negative feelings that we don’t even realize we’re there. It becomes easy to lose sight of who we are and difficult to find our way out. But the key is not to stay in the gap for too long. When negative feelings start to arise — self-doubt, frustration, or confusion — take a moment to pause, reflect, and bring awareness to where you are. Acknowledge that you’re in the gap, and remind yourself that it’s only temporary.

### How to Get Out of the Gap

So, how can you begin to emerge from the gap? Sometimes, it’s the simplest actions that can help:

- **A conversation with a friend or loved one** can provide a fresh perspective and help pull you out of the gap.

- **Reading something inspiring** or reflecting on your personal growth may help you see how far you’ve come, shifting your focus toward progress.

- **A comforting hug** or words of encouragement can remind you that you’re not alone and that you will get through this.

### Emerging Stronger

When you finally come out of the gap, you’ll feel more focused and stronger. A part of you that was temporarily lost will be restored, and you’ll emerge from the experience more complete.

As the saying goes, "If it wasn’t for darkness, we couldn’t see the stars." The challenges we face often reveal the light we didn't realize we had.

A Path Forward
Notes From The Coach: A Path Forward For Real Life Lately I’ve been having a lot of conversations with people who feel like they’ve drifted away from themselves. On paper, life looks “fine.”  But underneath, there’s this quiet sense of being off: - Saying yes when you want to say no  - Overthinking every decision  - Feeling responsible for everyone else’s emotions  - Moving through routines and...
Consistency
In this weeks, edition of notes from the coach, I wanna talk to you about the importance of consistency. We look at life and there’s a lot going on within daily life for everybody. Life can seem very overwhelming  we ask ourselves questions all the time like am I doing this right? Will this work out? Will things be OK? Will I be OK? It’s very common to ask these questions. You’re probably think...
What Is Your ROI or Your ROT?
We often talk about ROI — the return on investment — in financial terms. We measure what we put in against what we get back. But what if we measured something far more personal? Something that speaks not to dollars, but to days… not to profit, but to presence? That’s where ROT — your Return on Time — comes in. Have you ever stopped to think about it?Where do you invest your time? What kind of r...
