How Do We Adapt
One of the few guarantees in life is change. Whether it’s expected or not, change finds its way into our lives. And in this week’s edition of Notes from the Coach, we’re diving into how we adapt when it does.
Let’s start with a metaphor imagine you are a boat. Strange, maybe, but stay with me.
As the boat, you’re moving through the water that’s you in the present moment. The bow points toward the future, full of unknowns, while the wake left behind represents the past. Now think about this: when you try to turn around and chase the wake the past what happens? It disappears. The past vanishes just as quickly as it’s made. What truly matters is being present, propelling forward, and choosing how we engage with the future.
But how do we adapt to what’s coming?
Here’s where another metaphor comes in: the tree. Picture yourself as a tree going through change. We start by rooting into the new experience slowly, intentionally. As we become more comfortable, we begin to grow: small buds of knowledge, which over time become branches. Then, like any healthy tree, we continue strengthening our roots, reinforcing our foundation so we can keep growing taller and broader.
This slow, steady, grounded growth is a powerful way to adapt. It’s not rushed. It’s not reactive. It’s resilient.
Yes, change can be scary. It can shake us. But it can also open doors, ignite creativity, and lead to deep soul growth. When we take on things we once thought impossible, we stretch and grow in ways we never imagined.
Trees are symbols of wisdom for a reason. People gather under trees for peace, reflection, and clarity. The deeper we root ourselves in our experiences even the hard ones the more we offer not just to ourselves, but to those around us.
So look back on your own life.
Ten years ago, would you have guessed you’d be where you are now? Probably not. And yet, here you are. The constant thread? Change and your ability to adapt to it.
Like the boat heading into the unknown, or the tree growing into wisdom, life continues forward. The beauty lies in the journey, in trusting ourselves and the process. One root, one bud, one branch at a time.
Keep growing. Keep adapting. And always, keep appreciating the adventure.
With you on the journey,
Tyler
